I need to get to Vancouver this summer to visit relatives and I don't want to fly, but I don't want to spend that much time travelling. I am planning to drive to Chicago from Toronto, then catch a train to Seattle and transfer north to Vancouver.
Is one night enough for the trip?Is the Amtrak train from Chicago to Seattle for one night?
As Penny has mentioned, if you're driving up to Toronto, it'd probably be easier to take ViaRail, but you're looking at a three day and ten hour trip.
If you can stand taking Greyhound for long trips (I know I couldn't stand them, even on a short two hour trip), it's only two days and three hours, from Chicago.
The trip round trip would only cost $166 with Greyhound. ViaRail, around $1,000. Amtrak, around $370 round trip. (Greyhound and Amtrak prices, from Chicago to Vancouver. ViaRail, Toronto to Vancouver.)
Amtrak service is top notch as far as I'm concerned, I prefer them for shorter distances, if I'm not in a rush to get to my destination. You'll probably be able to find flights around the cost of your Amtrak trip. So unless you have a big fear of flying, that might honestly be your best bet.
Chicago to Toronto is a 10 hour drive assuming no traffic or customs, and you WILL hit both. Then you have the problem of where to leave your car in Chicago. The Amtrak station is more like downtown Toronto's station, nowhere to park, and nearby lots are definitely over $10/day. It won't work to find "free" street parking in a suburb, because they will tow/impound cars left %26gt;72 hours.
Amtrak Chicago-Seattle is 46 hours (if it's not late). It's a really nice ride. The bus to Vancouver adds another 4 hours (probably less if it runs on time.)
By VIA Rail, Toronto to Vancouver is one train, 3 1/2 days - but it is the ride of a lifetime, and I would envy you if you took it.Is the Amtrak train from Chicago to Seattle for one night?
I dont know the exact time frame but its more than one night, its at least two-three days. The train goes from Chicago to Milwaukee to Minneapolis across North Dakota, Montana, and Idaho and then into Washington State where it goes to Seattle. It travels along a current BNSF line that was a part of the old Burlington Northern Line on what used to be known as the North Coast Hiawatha Amtrak Line which I believe is currently named the empire builder. I am not sure of the current name but it can be found
now is that Vancouver BC Canada or Vancouver Washington?
a BIG difference there one where you will need your passport if you are going to the BC one (eff June 2009 all person might have passport to cross the border in both directions
other vancover you dont need it
why not just take VIA rail instead? you said you already in Canada
lot less hassle then crossing twice
It's a two night trip. It is The Empire Builder, one of the best routes on Amtrak. Beautiful scenery, if a bit too much of North Dakota.
Can you take the Canadian (VIA) Toronto to Vancouver?
It's 2 nights.
The train trip from Chicago to Seattle takes 46 hours. Statistically air travel is safer.
