Why do most people in Seattle drive less expensive automobiles?

I'm from Boston area and it seems like people drive much more expensive automobiles than people from the Seattle area, even though the average income is simular. Why is this? Are people from Seattle less materialistic? Why do most people in Seattle drive less expensive automobiles?
Oh wait you said Boston drives more expensive cars, The west coast is full of hippies and respect nature more. I guess they are more practical than Bostonites
I don't think you can make generalizations, but there are a few factors that might contribute.

Seattleites as a whole are younger, hipper and more focused on individual expression rather than status. Remember this is the origin of grunge --- translate that to autos.

The weather there is milder. There is seldom snow, just rain in the winter, so not so much road salt to damage car bodies, so cars tend to last longer.

In the 70s this was a premier destination for hippies, the aging hippie population has held fast to their ideals of living simply. Did you know there are more running VW microbuses in the pacific northwest than anywhere else in the nation?

Seattle has a big population of outdoor enthusiasts. Home of REI (Recreational Equipment Inc.) within hours you can be on Olympic Peninsula, Mt Rainier, Mt. Baker, the San Juan Islands. All these destinations invite weekend hiking and "roughing it" trips. You don't really want to strap a Kayak to your Mercedes or BMW, and you can't fit all your gear in the back of your Porche. You need sturdy stuff for rough and tumble adventures.

Cant say it's THE answer, but its a few factors that could contributeWhy do most people in Seattle drive less expensive automobiles?
it depends what neighborhood you are in. I live in Enumclaw and you see a lot of Hummers and SUV's where as when you just go right into Auburn WA 20 minutes from Seattle you see a lot of ghetto cars and old cadi's
They all have heavy Latte habits.
I think you need to get out more. Geez.
wtf he was asking why theyre LESS expensive. well anyways, i think it depends what area of seattle youre in. but theres alot of ghetto areas so i guess thats what you were lookin at.
There are a few reasons for that.

1. Boston has more salt water damage on cars, therefore cities closer to salt water, if wealthy enough, would replace old cars sooner. Seattle, while on the Sound, is not as salty.

2. Seattle, as the census tells us, is one of the youngest cities in the US and younger people often still have their first cars that they got handed from their parents or bought themselves. While Seattle and Boston might have equal pay scales, many young jobs in the Seattle area are high tech and filled by young people that did not grow up here, which leads me to my third reason.

3. Seattle people are rarely from Seattle. I was born in Florida actually and grew up in California and Idaho. Most people here grew up elsewhere. I would assume that Boston has a lot of lcoal Bostonites that stayed there all their years, and since they move less, they might buy newer cars as a substitute for buying a new house like Seattle people seem to do with regularity.

Jonathan
gotta make the starbucks bill

But check out Mercer Island, Newcastle, Bellevue, Kirkland, Redmond if you wanna see some nice cars.
Huh? Where were you when you saw all of these less expensive automobiles? In Seattle, people mostly drive Explorers and other SUVs. Even Hummers. Drives me crazy, because I have to park near all of these people!
I'm from Mass, and I must say the opposite. Maybe it is depending on where you go. Over here on the east side of Seattle, cars are waay more expensive. Kind of like the North Shore is in Mass.
